Abstract

This paper describes mixed tactile and speech input modes implemented on a PDA as a solution to various problems of information access for the visually impaired. A prototype of the mixed-mode input dialogues has been developed in a non-visual news browser on a desktop computer. A pilot study is being conducted on this computer to determine how best to mix speech and touch input for visually impaired users. With the knowledge gained from the pilot study, a mixed-mode input environment will be built on PDA. Once the PDA prototype is operational a field study conducted on visually impaired subjects using this input environment will extend our understanding of how to effectively design mixed touch and speech input for various tasks and input contexts.
