Abstract

Principle-based parsing is parsing in which the rules of grammar are not stated explicitly, but rather inferred from more general principles. In practice this means Government and Binding (GB) theory (Chomsky 1982). Readers unfamiliar with GB theory will find it largely demystified by Berwick's introductory article; Sells (1985) gives a good concise overview.
