The rediscovery of the mind

There has been a recent resurgence of interest in consciousness, resulting in new books by Dennett [Den91], Edelman [Ede92], and Searle [Sea92], just to mention the most prominent. Whereas each of these three has their own theory to expound, Flanagan is content to mediate the philosophical disputes rather than offer his own solution to the mind-body problem. He ends his book by saying that, "despite its extraordinary difficulty, the problem of consciousness is beginning to yield." This purported progress, however, is not so evident in book.
