Abstract

In this paper we evaluate and test the performance of the Java Speech API under two speech processing engines, namely Microsoft SAPI and Sphinx4 (alpha). The tests are carried out in the context of developing a distributed speech recognition system for the command and control of a remote device. The test software simulates this deployment with a subset of the final command grammar and we measure the recognition performance of both speech engines under this premise. The test environment consists of Windows XP and 2000 based systems running the Java Runtime Environment v1.4 and v1.5 (beta). We present our performance benchmark findings, draw a number of important conclusions and discuss future research and upcoming development, particularly in the Linux environment.
