C++ was designed and originally implemented by Bjarne Stroustrup in AT&T Bell Lab's Computer Science Research Center in Murray Hill, New Jersey. The work on what became C++ started in 1979 and led to a first commercial release from AT&T in October 1985. At this point, the language was defined by the first edition of The C++ Programming Language (Stroustrup, 1986). The early C++ added better type checking, support for data abstraction, and support for object-oriented programming to the C programming language.
