Abstract

Error-detecting and error-correcting codes are essential parts of most forms of digital communication and storage. Proper operation of the Internet (q.v.), modems (q.v.), compact discs (see OPTICAL STORAGE), and computers would be impossible without them. Many recent advances in the speed and reliability of digital communication are directly related to improved design of codes.
