Ethernet is by far the most widely used local area network (LAN) technology, and all indications are that it is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. Since its invention in the mid-l970s, it has evolved to the point that now it supports data transmission rates of 10, 100 and even 1,000 million bits per second (Mbps), bus or star topologies, and multiple transmission media such as coaxial cable and unshielded twisted pairs as well as single or multimode optical fibers. It is this constant improvement that has allowed Ethernet to maintain its dominant role in LAN technology.
