Abstract

Most applications of artificial intelligence (AI) are of a type called expert systems. An expert system (ES) is a computer program that reasons, using knowledge, to solve complex problems. Traditionally, computers have solved complex problems by arithmetic calculation (not logical reasoning), and the knowledge needed to solve the problem is known only by the human programmer and is used to cast the solution in terms of an algorithm (q.v.). With expert systems, such human knowledge is captured and embedded explicitly within the program in symbolic nonnumeric formats.
