Abstract

The concept of a fuzzy set, introduced by L. A. Zadeh in 1965, deals with the representation of classes whose boundaries are not sharp. It uses a characteristic function taking values usually in the interval [0, 1] (although other linearly ordered, or even partially ordered, finite or not, scales are sometimes used). In a fuzzy set, transition between membership and non-membership is gradual rather than abrupt; some elements that are considered as "marginal" or "less acceptable" are given a degree of membership that is intermediate between 0 (nonmembership) and 1 (full membership).
