Abstract

Information theory entered the world of engineering, science, and mathematics through the paper "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" published by Claude Elwood Shannon in the Bell System Technical Journal in 1948, and, together with material by Warren Weaver, republished in a book of the same name by the University of Illinois Press in 1949. The book gives an excellent presentation of Shannon's revolutionary ideas.
