Abstract

For the purpose of this article, multiprocessing is the simultaneous processing of two or more computational portions of the same program by two or more processing units. The simultaneous processing of different programs on a system with several CPUs (one program/CPU) sharing a common memory is considered here as an extension of multiprogramming rather than true multiprocessing.
