Abstract

Packet switching is a term used to describe the internal operations of a particular type of data communications network that usually has a fixed topology and uses software to route information in a special format through the network from source to destination. A packet-switched data communication network is composed of a number of geographically separate nodes connected by dedicated high-speed data links. The nodes are (usually) stored program computers that have internal data link connections to the other nodes and external data links connected to local terminals and computers. Fig. 1 illustrates an example of a packet-switched data communications network.
