Abstract

It is imperative to access the correctness of software for critical applications prior to actual use. Ideally we would like to verify formally that a program is correct. However, besides the practical difficulties encountered in applying current formal verification techniques to large programs, they cannot cope with the possibility of specification errors. An alternative approach is to use statistical methods to estimate the reliability of the software based on the outcome of program testing.
