Abstract

In the early 1980s, the Lax Report, written by a panel convened by the US National Science Board and chaired by peter Lax, indicated that the academic community lacked much needed high-performance computing resources. This report and other studies predicted that, unless support was given to computational science and engineering and the researchers who used such resources, science and the USA's economic competitiveness would suffer.
