Abstract

In broadest computing terms, transaction processing describes the activity performed by a computer upon the introduction of an external stimulus, usually data. A transaction consists of a collection of functionally related data elements in combination with a signal that is either explicit (often referred to as a transaction code) or implied through the context of the application. The transaction code requests that a particular operation be performed in regard to the associated data elements.
