Abstract

The most influential paper in the history of computer science, whether or not anyone else expressed similar ideas earlier, was written in 1946 by John von Neumann, then on the staff of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, in collaboration with Arthur W. Burks and Herman H. Goldstine. Its title is "Preliminary Discussion of the Logical Design of an Electronic Computing Instrument," and the ideas it contains, collectively known as the von Neumann machine, have provided the foundation for essentially all computer system developments since that date.
