This paper deals with the use of minicomputers for doing algebraic computations. The current algebraic manipulation systems have generally unsuitable sizes for minicomputers. At present, the use of an algebraic system requires access to expensive computers that are often not immediately available. On the other hand, the success of minicomputers provides the very attractive possibility of bringing algebraic computation to more users than in the past. Actually, the work done checks this possibility having in mind, of course, particular types of applications. The main goal of our project has been to investigate whether or not it makes sense to use minicomputers in algebraic manipulation. Our conclusion is that for particular types of applications, it definitely does.
