Students in introductory classes working alone on programming assignments sometimes hit "roadblocks" that can be very frustrating for them. One solution is to have closed labs to help the students understand concepts before going off to work on out-of-class assignments. However, if the course is not set-up to have closed labs, a possible way to provide this sort of help is to give in-class assignments during a lecture or recitation section. This paper reports on the author's experience with this approach.
