In this paper, the optimum averaging method is investigated for small scale fading removal from wireless signals. The effect of Rician K factor is investigated, and the method is proved to work in line-of-sight conditions as well as non-line of sight. Intensive field test results show that, on average 12.5% fewer samples are required when optimum averaging is employed, compared to the other methods in the literature. This decreases the required averaging distance from 40λ to 35λ, resulting in a better tracking of the lognormal fading, and eventually resulting in better fast fading removal, hence more accurate propagation model tuning.
