Abstract

In this paper, we present an implementation and performance analysis of IEEE 802.11i security standard over an 802.11b WLAN. Analysis of the performance of WLAN when using 802.11i cryptographic algorithms has not been published. The IXP425 network processor is used and tests results are analyzed for TCP, UDP and VOIP traffic. Our results show that for an overloaded WLAN link the degradation in throughput for TCP traffic is gradual, while the degradation for UDP traffic is very sharp. The experiments also show that the maximum number of VOIP calls using G711-law codec that can be supported by the 802.11i link is 21.
