From research to application: the cite natural language information retrieval system

Automatic information retrieval, that is document retrieval, was an early concern in computing. It might, however, be thought that since modern on-line systems have more than achieved the technological aims of the original workers in the field, there is no further need for research. I shall argue that this is not the case.
