Abstract

There is a growing recognition that user services play a critical role in facilitating the use of computing resources. The need for formal aids is especially keen in a network environment, because a prospective user typically does not have face-to-face access to colleagues who can provide informal assistance. Important tasks that must be dealt with in improving user services include the creation of high-quality written documentation, establishing selective network standards, implementing automated user services, developing competent user service personnel, and establishing contractual relationships between suppliers of network services and local support personnel.
