Program debugging for minicomputers with paper tape input can be a frustrating and time consuming process. One way to simplify this process is to develop a simulator for the minicomputer which operates on a large host computer. The assumption is made that turn around time on the host computer is reasonable and that debug diagnostics are included. The first step of the simulator design is to develop a hardware reference language description of the instruction set. This step is useful even if a simulator is not developed because it requires one to obtain a complete understanding of the instruction set, the registers, and the interactions of all of the control signals. Such understanding is a prerequisite to the development of successful programs for the mini, especially at the assembler level. This paper describes the implementation of simulator-assembler packages for minicomputers.
