The development of peer-to-peer applications has reached a point where they will have to surpass the limitations of tradition file sharing applications like those pioneered by Napster and Gnutella. In this paper we examine the JXTA platform v2.1 and the challenges it faces in meeting the near real-time characteristics required by next generation peer-to-peer applications.
