Shared virtual worlds have many applications in computer supported collaborative work (CSCW) and computer games such as massive multiplayer online games (MMOG). One key challenge in MMOG is the creation of believable non-player characters (NPC). This paper proposes a new type of intelligent virtual agents within a MMOG. Its ability for fast inference, goal-oriented and non-deterministic behaviors leads NPCs that are responsive and with a certain degree of unpredictability which are vital to the engaging game play.
