This two part paper explores management issues raised by expert systems (ES). In the first section, a brief history of ES is presented, and the competitive potential of ES is analyzed from a business policy perspective. The second section, appearing in the next issue, discusses development and implementation issues of ES. Both sections highlight similarities and differences between expert systems and other types of information systems.
