In the data exchange mechanism of current visual language specification systems, different languages are used as structure data exchange format, layout data exchange format and internal data format. These mechanisms are complex ones, but in some contexts they can be simplified. Analyzing the properties of Visual Rewriting Systems, a specific type of visual language specification system, we detect a great similarity between its formalism and the Scalable Vector Graphics standard (SVG). Based on such similarity, we propose the Visual Rewriting System based on SVG (VRSS). In VRSS, the SVG language is used as the internal data format and as a data exchange format that describes both the structure and the layout of visual sentences. Such data exchange mechanism is simpler than the current exchange mechanisms, besides it offers a greater XML interoperability.
