Environmental scientists get access to information through a broad range of methods and tools: FROM raw-data acquisition to intelligent based DSS. The design and implementation of "Environmental Information Systems" (EIS) to facilitate the use of environmental information includes various issues, such as data format user interface, the nature of users questions, data characteristics (i.e. variability, reliability and periodicity) and the users intention for using the EIS. The ECOSTAT Software for "Windows" is a DSSE (Decision Support System for Environmental purposes that has been developed in the IFS framework, over the last three years. One of the crucial milestones for the ECOSTAT Software design is the potential users of the final product (ie: their wishes, needs, preferences). An approach that the IS's designers utilize is the "pilot case". This provides designers with useful information about users and their interaction with the DSSE under construction. A case study of interfacing the ECOSTAT Software prototype was carried out in development of a WRMP for water uses in agriculture.
