In this paper, we focus on combining hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) at the data link layer and adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) at the physical layer in a cross-layer design approach. First, a new AMC adaptation scheme has been proposed with the constraints of system parameters like maximum retransmission number and packet error rate (PER). Then we analyze the system PER performance and the spectral efficiency of the proposed cross-layer AMC adaptation scheme. Numerical results show that our scheme can achieve good spectral efficiency while satisfying the target delay and goodput performance.
