The well-known diversity technique, space-time block codes (STBC) can be employed at both the transmitting and receiving ends to increase the system capacity. Besides, RAKE receiver is widely used in wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) system to combat the multipaths fading. RAKE receiver can co-phase the multipaths signals and add these signals to form the coherent output in the temporal domain. Because of the spatial and temporal diversity features, the combination of STBC and RAKE receiver is expected to have further system improvement when the channel estimation is perfect. In this paper, we will derive an analytical result on system degradation in terms of signal interference noise ratio (SINR) of the STBC-RAKE receiver when channel estimation is imperfect in real practice. Besides, we will also propose an easy and analytic method to improve this degradation. Experimental measured examples are presented to analyze the system degradation and verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
