In this article a new technique for the estimation of the cross sectional area of a vessel in three dimensional magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is presented. Therefore multi planar reconstruction (MPR) images perpendicular to the vessel center line are used as input image for the fitting algorithm. The proposed ellipse fitting is based on the digitization process of an ideal ellipse image. It can be further reduced to a nonlinear optimization problem, which can be solved using standard optimization algorithms. Moreover tests shows the effectiveness and robustness of the method presented.
