We discuss a simulation using OPNET Modeller [1] to produce a simple, typical network topology using industry standard switches. On testing it was found that the network was vulnerable to denial of service attacks and a switch failed to perform within specifications. We attribute this to the topology and use it as an example to emphasize the need to test even simple designs. This can be achieved using models or simulators where exhaustive testing of network infrastructure is not possible. We discuss the nature of a denial of service attack and the modelling of bottlenecks.
