Abstract

This paper presents two original uses of distance maps, on the one hand, to define an adaptive filtering method in the spatial domain, and on the other hand, to define some shape descriptors of molecular domains, in order to characterize them. The physical context is first described, in order to explain in what way the image acquisition is realized. Then, the adaptive filtering method is explained. Afterwards, the filtered images are thresholded, in order to measure interesting features for shape classification. In a former time, the fractal aspect of the island borders is carefully studied, before paying more attention to the surface in 3D of each molecular domain.
