Abstract

In this paper we describe numerical simulation of one-dimensional heat distribution as an example to teach parallel computing concepts in an introductory course. Specifically, with this simple example we introduce the core concepts of parallelism that includes domain decomposition and partitioning, load balancing and mapping, communication, speedup, and scalability. We also show the benchmarking results of the parallel version of one-dimensional heat distribution problem.
