Abstract

In this work, we are considering the acknowledgement implosion problem at the intermediate routers in a reliable multicast scenario. In this kind of multicasting, the server expects all the clients to give acknowledgements. Thus when all the clients give acknowledgements the overhead on the server can increase. We are presenting a solution to this problem by way of using the Network processors to fuse the acknowledgement packets at the intermediate nodes. We are discussing the design and the implementation issues related to our work. The design and the implementation issues are being discussed with respect to the Intel IXP 2400 Network processor. The special features of the network processor are being exploited to solve this ACK implosion problem.
