Abstract

On behalf of the Computer History Museum and the ACM, Grady Booch recently interviewed John Backus, who led the IBM team that created Fortran in the 1950s. Backus went on to coinvent the Backus-Naur Form (which was first applied to the definition of ALGOL), then later pioneered important advances in functional programming. After a wide-ranging conversation, Booch concluded that, for a given domain, even across the decades, forces are at play that are best resolved by a common architectural pattern that allows variants.
