Abstract

In this paper we will analyze the many components of a L3 hand-off and will introduce a novel algorithm for reducing the L3 hand-off time. We will introduce the concept of Temporary IP address (TEMP_IP) as a way to resume communication immediately after the handoff while waiting for the DHCP server to assign us a new IP address (NEW_IP). We will show how, with our approach, it is possible to reduce the L3 handoff latency to values that in some cases allow us to have seamless VoIP sessions.
