Previous research shows considerable overlap among perfective, corrective, and adaptivemaintenance tasks in software development projects. A case study involving two recentproducts provides further empirical evidence of this distribution and sheds light on how wellprogrammers estimate both the type of maintenance necessary and the duration with somesignificant surprises.
