We present a closed-form bit error rate (BER) expression for multistage parallel interference cancellation (PIC) schemes implemented in asynchronous direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems over Nakagami multipath fading channels. Instead of the conventional standard Gaussian approximation (SGA) approach, we adopt an improved Gaussian approximation (IGA) method, which takes into account the second order effects of the multiple access interference (MAI), to derive the BER expression. We show by Monte Carlo (MC) simulation that the derived expression indeed gives an accurate prediction of the error performance of PIC-DS-CDMA systems. The BER formula presented can be used to alleviate extensive computer simulation usually required for performance evaluation of PIC-DS-CDMA systems.
