In wireless sensor network, one of the main design challenges is to obtain long network lifetime by turning off some redundant nodes while maintaining sufficient sensing coverage and connectivity. In this paper, we investigates the criterion to decide whether a sensor is redundant, and propose a improved method to determine if a sensor is completely covered by its neighbors, especially for boundary sensors. Then we propose an enhanced perimeter coverage based density control algorithm (EPCDC) for large scale sensor networks. Experimental results show that our algorithm outperforms the PEAS algorithm and the Jiang's algorithm with respect to the number of offduty sensors needed, thus extend the network lifetime.
