First I give an introduction to the POSIX.1 set of standards. I am going to continue with an survey of POSIX.1, POSIX.1b and POSIX.1c. Standards as treated here are seen as an application programming interface (API), defined by some kind of protocol between application and system programming. In the following I am going to examine what functionality is provided and what is available under Linux. Mostly I take the perspective of an application programmer however sometimes some additional remarks on POSIX.1 certification issues are given. Included topics are POSIX.1, its extensions and a short review of XPG4 features.
