Abstract

This column explores the conjunction of two facts: (1) experts can perceive things that are invisible to the novice and (2) it takes a decade or more for someone to become an expert in most significant domains. This conjunction represents a leverage point for intelligent systems—not from the Turing Test perspective of building machines that emulate humans but from the human-centered computing perspective of amplifying and extending human capabilities.
