Abstract

Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) is briefly reviewed in this article. The incentive for the application of such operations has increased by reason of the very large picture databases which are now available - laboriously indexed and retrieved with descriptive words. It appears that the intense research activity of the early nineties has not resulted in the adoption of the several commercially available systems for retrieving images from large collections, particularly in applying shape-matching techniques. Possible advances in this field are discussed.
