This paper discusses the results obtained from a sensor network installed in a person's home as part of a twelve month Telecare trial. The aim of the trial was to unobtrusively collect data to detect changes in a person's daily activity (washing, eating, watching television etc.) around a home, using a low power/cost sensor network. A number of different sensors were used and the data sets fused to provide a rich data set that allowed patterns of daily living to be extracted. The paper continues to describe further work, which will be the basis of an Eng. D investigating even lower power sensing capabilities. By focussing on low power sensing, it is expected that meaningful sensor data can be collected from thermal energy scavenged from the water pipes in the home.
