Abstract

Instead of using product codes for progressive image transmission over noisy fading channels, we extend, in this paper, a recently proposed image transmission method by the authors by interleaving each coded packet to fading channels so that the effect of burst error can be converted into the random bit errors. As a result, the design of unequal error protection for fading channel can be unified with the rate compatible punctured turbo (RCPT) codes protection only. We show that a better performance than the product code protection can be obtained for a given channel condition. Furthermore, the proposed method is also insensitive to the channel variation. Some interesting technical components including a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based rate allocation method, using RS codes to break the error floor of the turbo codes are also discussed in the paper. The advantages of the proposed methods have been demonstrated with extensive simulation results.
