Abstract

The Arizona Virtual Patient (AVP) is a dialogue-based patient simulator for training pharmacy students. The AVP uses state-of-the-art question-answering techniques, including a taxonomy of expected answer types. After the user enters a question, a database of patient profiles is queried and an appropriate answer in the form of a video is displayed. The patient database can be augmented by non-programmers. It is argued that the AVP is an effective tool for instructing pharmacy students in pharmacist-patient interaction.
