Abstract

Recent advances in wireless communication and multimedia processing allow mobile hosts access to multimedia content on the Internet via wireless connections. However, due to the best-effort character of the Internet and the limited resources available in wireless systems, there are many new issues and trade-offs that require discussion. Among these issues, the smooth playback of multimedia streams is an important topic. In this paper, we present a smooth playback technique for progressive multimedia streams over the Internet with wireless connections. The proposed technique employs progressive encoding techniques for multimedia streams and uses a modified MoSync algorithm to synchronize the streams at different levels of quality. Experimental results show that this technique can offer a high QoS for wireless multimedia systems.
