Underwater networks of sensors have the potential to enable unexplored applications and to enhance our ability to observe and predict the ocean. In this paper, architectures for two-dimensional and three-dimensional underwater sensor networks are proposed. A detailed overview on the current solutions for medium access control, network, and transport layer protocols is given and open research issues are discussed.
