This paper explores how access to synchronous, non-verbal awareness information influences the usage of web-based systems. The results are based on a field experiment that utilizes a web based art exhibition enhanced with an awareness module. The results show that users that are aware of other co-present users spend significantly longer time in the gallery. However, the awareness information does not seem to affect the users' navigation pattern.
