The modeling and analysis of a USB storage device with a novel protection mechanism is described. The USB storage device contains an active monitoring subsystem that decodes and analyzes an encoded request stream has been developed by Clifton Labs. However, before moving to fabrication, there are several design parameters that need to be explored and better understood. In this manuscript we review our experiences in the modeling and analysis of our USB device using the Microsoft Windows Driver's kit. Initially we began this project with limited experience with the USB bus protocol and with no prior experience with the Microsoft device driver tools. In this paper we describe our work modeling and analyzing the new USB storage device and describe our the problems and complications we encountered using these modeling and analysis tools.
